Google Ignite! 2022

Writer: JAYE BRIANNA YAP _JAYE BRIANNA YAP _

SMU Women in Tech was proud to bring back the flagship Google Ignite! program for its second year running: a product sprint supplemented by exclusive workshops and mentorship sessions. Once again, teams were challenged to come up with a solution to address one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – this time, with a focus on mobile app development.

The program ran for 4 weeks, with Flutter workshops led by Google experts at the Google Developers Space.

Following the release of the problem statement, we formally kicked off on 9th September with Bill Cheung, who spoke about the process of problem-solving and ideation. Our participants were able to meet their mentors, kickstart their ideas, and plan project milestones.

For Session 2, participants began their coding journeys with an introduction to Flutter by A Theeraphol, who shared about the software's various capabilities which makes app development seamless. For a hands-on experience, Kim Joshua brought the participants through Google Codelabs to create their first Flutter app, breaking down the steps along the way.

Teams continued to hone their Flutter skills at Session 3. Yiheng brought them through the use of plugins; specifically, they tried out the camera plugin feature, a useful tool in their app development journey.

The final workshop, led by Ziwei, introduced them to the Google Maps Flutter plugin. Teams were able to get hands-on by changing coordinates in their code to explore different parts of the map.

At last, Pitch Day arrived! After 4 weeks of informative workshops at Google, our participants had the opportunity to present their solutions to the judges, Yohan, Cristen, Kyong, and Yi Meng.

It was exciting to see so many unique ideas and hear valuable feedback from the judges on how to further improve their apps.

A hearty congratulations to Team 4 (Buzz Lightyear), Team 10 (TeamCSS) and Team 5 (Team Mahjong) for clinching 3rd, 2nd and 1st, respectively!

Google Ignite! 2022 would not have been possible without the enthusiasm of our participants; mentors ZhiHao, Jeremiah, Felix, Haozhe, Caleb, Yohuan, Ziwei, Nicholette, Jia Hao, Yiheng; and judges.

Finally, we would like to thank Monika Hengki for working with us to plan and execute this event, and making sure it ran smoothly from start to finish.

All in all, it was an exciting start to SMU Women in Tech's 2nd year running.
